Lab Report

Using the open-source AI image generator Craiyon, this lab report investigates the racial and gender biases present in AI-generated imagery. In an experiment, the authors created 300 pictures of three different occupations: doctor, lawyer, and college professor. They then contrasted these pictures with actual demographic information from Zippia.com. The results showed that white people and men were disproportionately overrepresented in the AI, which perpetuated preconceived notions and misrepresented diversity. The study underscores the need for more inclusive and equitable training data and draws attention to the possible risks of algorithmic bias in generative AI. The report’s conclusion discusses the social effects of these biases and the significance of openness in AI development.
